Many Hebrew and Muslim sisters have taken on this feminist label which they believe is a mindset and political movement that is for the emancipation of women from the patriarchy. Feminism as a political ideology may have had somewhat noble beginnings and good intentions but its mutations and evolution have been no less than poisonous and insidious.
The movement began initially in America and was concerned only with the emancipation from the injustice suffered by the white British descended women in America from their men in the society at large and socially. The movement was not concerned with the fate of Hebrew (black) women nor with Muslimahs. It simply did not have these demographics in mind especially at that time, in the nineteenth century. Muslim women were not in the west in any large numbers and certainly wouldn’t have been considered equal. Hebrews were still very much seen as a slaves and therefore there were no rights for them to fight for.
As feminism has evolved over the last one hundred and fifty years it has gone through intellectual and cultural change which has seen it adopt new ideas and expanded its scope to include other demographics. It welcomes even men into their political groups although some within particular strands of feminism reject that men can ever really be feminists or should be welcomed within feminist spaces at all.
I do not wish to analyse all the different periods and waves of feminism but simply to highlight that feminism now has shown its true face in regards to Hebrew and Muslim women outside Europe. Feminism is no more than the ideology of its founders like any other ideology. It was always the struggle of the middle/upper class western European women against her social, political and economic position within her society it was never meant to be a weapon against her men and his world hegemony. The European woman was well aware that her position was still one of privilege and based upon the global oppression of other people. Feminism was always meant to improve her position within her context but not harm his position within the world. This then becomes manifest in the geo-political interests of western nations such as America and Britain.
As America has deemed Afghanistan, Iran, Palestine, Yemen, Iraq and Sudan and other nations to be enemies to western geo-political interests, Feminism has been silent about the struggle of these women when they are being bombed and killed by western European nations. The only time feminism seems to worry about Muslim women is when feminism can be of service to her men in discrediting those countries for oppressing Muslim women by not allowing Muslim women to have the same morals as western women. The slaughter and murder of those same women doesn’t seem to cause the same condemnation. Western feminism hasn’t changed in this regard at all, it is being very faithful and consistent to its founding interests. It was only meant to be a movement for the advancement of the white middle class European women and never a weapon against western European men in their position in the world. Feminism was always ok with the oppression of non-white and Muslim women globally because it was the collateral price of western European hegemony of which she is a beneficiary.
Great article Shaykh mA. You have succinctly highlighted many troves of discourse whilst keeping the important focus on feminism as a modern European hegemonic device. I would love to see this stimulus developed and harnesed against the monstrous and (in my opinion) most pressing issue of breaking the hegemonic stranglehold and that is down to us, for Allah will not change the condition of a people unless they change the condition of themselves (13:11). بارك الله فيكم
One of the issues with these false ideologies is that our women have been duped into following feminism and this becomes a way of dividing us further. If we as a people do not resist such fracturing it will be more difficult to throw off the hegemony as divided we are weakened.
